Energy Transition Summit 2021

Powered by Arctic Securities

The climate crisis is the greatest challenge of our time. Limiting the rise in global temperatures to 1.5°C will necessitate emission reductions of a scale unimaginable only a short while ago. But, while an increasing number of supernational organisations, countries and enterprises announce pledges, plans and strategies for reaching net zero emissions by 2050, global greenhouse gas emissions continue to grow! The Inaugural Energy Transition Summit will probe if the gap between rhetoric, plans and actions is narrowing. It will also highlight the role of investor activism to drive enterprises to speed up transformation. Lastly, it will present a selection of companies and technologies that promise to accelerate decarbonisation already during this decade. The Energy Transition Summits will break down the global issues into tangible topics that innovators, enterprises, investors, and regulators can influence.

Always Relevant – Always Concrete – Always Challenging!

About Gas & Oil Technologies Collaboration Program (GOT CP)

GOT CP was established in 2013 as a technology collaboration under the IEA Global Innovation Network, with a belief that the future of energy security and sustainability starts with global collaboration. The network is made up of thousands of experts across government, academia, and industry dedicated to advancing common research and the application of specific energy technologies. GOT CP works to combine the efforts between a broad range of stakeholders, encouraging the development of oil & gas related technologies, and addressing the policy and regulatory drivers that allow for its use. By doing so, GOT CP works  to identify, address and resolve major challenges facing the technology innovation under way using IEA global convening power and thought leadership. The GOT Operating Agent is a legal entity under Norwegian law serving the role as the secretariat for the GOT Programme, and key responsible body for the implementation of its activities.

DAY 1

The first day of the summit will focus on the big picture; Is the gap between rhetoric and actions too big or is there a realistic path towards being net zero by 2050?

Prominent speakers and panelists will cover policymaking, research, investor perspective, electrification, large scale zero emission initiatives of  enterprises, and, carbon emission pricing.

Topics covered during day 1:

  • Realistic pathways to Net Zero and their cost/benefit consequences
  • What is required for a company to be/remain investable?
  • Is the World on Track on Electrification?
  • Hydrocarbons in a Net Zero context
  • Carbon Emission Pricing
  • Large Scale Zero Emission Projects

DAY 2

What is really driving the energy transition? How will it impact businesses and what role will technology play in tomorrow’s landscape? The green shift has been discussed and predicted for decades, but now the transition is finally gaining considerable pace. As a consequence, there will be a profound impact on the global economy and the environment in the coming years. The second day of the summit will focus on four important areas for energy transition: Batteries, Offshore wind, Forest Carbon (LULUCF) and Marine Fuels. Each session will comprise of three to four companies presenting followed by Q&A or a panel discussion.

Batteries

Electrification is one of the megatrends of our times. An important driving force for this development is that battery storage is one of the most discussed topics of the energy transition. The mass deployment of storage could overcome one of the biggest obstacles to renewable energy – it’s cycling between oversupply and shortage. Widespread energy storage could be key to expanding the reach of renewables and speeding the transition to a carbon-free power grid.

Offshore Wind

Offshore wind  accounts for only 0.3 % of today’s global power generation, with a total installed capacity of 29GW. But that is literally a drop in the ocean of its potential, according to the IEA, which says there are enough offshore wind resources globally to meet total global electricity demand 18 times over. The industry is scaling up rapidly, amid dramatic falls in cost, increases in turbine sizes, and recognition of its critical role in fostering a green hydrogen economy. The growing demand for green hydrogen is driving a rapid expansion in ocean-based power production.

Forest Carbon (LULUCF)

Land use, currently a top emitting sector, will have a key role in reducing global GHG emissions. Land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) sectors encompass activities emitting or absorbing carbon dioxide stemming from farmlands, wetlands and forests, and all together are responsible for around 7% of global GHG emissions. The role of LULUCF activities in the mitigation of climate change has long been recognized. Activities in the LULUCF sector can provide a relatively cost-effective way of offsetting emissions, either by increasing the removals of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere (e.g. by planting trees or managing forests), or by reducing emissions (e.g. by curbing deforestation).

Marine Fuels

The shipping industry is under increasing pressure to act on the Paris Agreement and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The need for substantial emission reductions over the next decades is expected to drive technology development and the introduction of low-carbon fuels. If the shipping industry is to meet the targets for emissions reduction, new vessels will have to run on alternative marine fuels or electricity (shortsea only).

Ammonia, hydrogen, bio-fuels, ethanol and methanol are all contenders for the future marine fuel of choice. However, it is difficult to invest in zero emission vessels before the fuels are commercially available and the necessary infrastructure and value chains are in place. To speed up the process stronger instruments, such as regulations and/or carbon emission pricing, are needed to create and scale up markets for emission free marine fuels and make them profitable for the industry.
